7th Grade with Moreh Chaim

December 4, 2016

Hi JJEP Families,

I hope this email finds everyone doing well. It’s been a hectic few weeks, but I wanted to touch base quickly about some of the things we’ve been doing and some of the things coming up. First of all, Latkepalooza is coming up on December 18. We will have T’fila at 9:30 and then Latkepalooza festivities from 10-12:30.

The students have been doing an exceptional job wrestling with some complex issues in class. We’ve spent a few sessions discussing retributive vs restorative justice and how the ideas are reflected in the different interactions of Noah and Abraham in response to G-d. We have just begun a new discussion on the role of women within the community, both currently and historically, and the kids took some time this past week to research Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Regina Jonas, Emma Goldman, and Golda Meir. We will work more on this in the upcoming weeks.

See you on Sunday,

Greetings 7th grade families,

We had a great discussion in class yesterday. It was nice to see the kids again and we were able to jump right into the structure of class. We’ll be evaluating a lot of complex issues this year and yesterday we took the time to talk about how we can have constructive debate and disagreement as well as the role that debate has traditionally had in Judaism. It was an interesting coincidence that it also happened to be the date of the second presidential debate, it would be nice if our national leaders would take a time out and learn from the wonderful example of these JJEP kids.

See you next Sunday,

Hi 7th grade families,

I’ve been waiting a long time to meet a lot of these 7th graders (Morah Marissa raved about them last year) and I wasn’t disappointed. We had a great discussion on Jewish Values and how we could find them in the world around us. We also had the opportunity to look through newspapers to discover the ways that so many of those values are already in play. I’m looking forward to a look of great discussion from this group of students.

Just a reminder that there’s no JJEP this upcoming Sunday due to the Great Race. See you in two weeks,

Hi JJEP families,

I’m Moreh Chaim and I’ll be teaching the 4th and 7th grade students this year. Some of you I already know and I’m looking forward to getting to know the rest of you. In my spare time I like to read comic books and teach Social Studies at CDS. I have two sons (9 and 6) both of whom also go to JJEP, so you’ll probably see us eating bagels and playing with Legos when you come in Sunday mornings.

This year the 4th graders will report to their electives right away at 9:30 and then to their Jewish Learning Lab at 11. The 7th graders will go to their classroom first and then their electives at 11.

We have all-school T’fillah from 10:30-11:00 and would love to welcome all family and parents to join us if your available.

Looking forward to a great year,

Chaim Steinberg
